Thorens TD 146
(Another fabulous Thorens turntable. Sounds great and works well. The TD146 has electronic lift at the end of the record and an electronic start and motor control. My one has a black finish on the plinth and is made from MDF. I have simply got this one up and running as is, essentially as per factory, apart from new (from my "parts box" feet) otherwise it's stock.
I have lubed the bearing, the suspension was still fine and did not need adjustment; the arm has been lubed and bearings adjusted, and set up for a Nagaoka MP110 cartridge that I have. Unfortunately both anti-skating weights were missing so I'll need to source those, in the meantime a small (weighed on scales 0.4 gram the same as the small one) nut on a piece of fine nylon works well.
The tone arm (TP63) is similar to the TD160/165 (TP11 tone arm) but has a wand that detaches close to the pivot/bearing, where as the TD165 has a removable head shell leaving the rest of the arm intact.
How does it sound? absolutely fantastic, I cant tell the difference between this and the TD165 and I really like it, the convenience of the auto shutoff and arm return at the end of record is great.
So far the only "weakness" is the text on the top plate that seems to wear off very easily, not evident on the TD 160's that I have, so something must have changed? well I will look for some letter transfers, and see if I can find something similar to replace it with.
More to come as I work with this turntable and maybe tweak it as per the many opinions/ideas available!!! but not until I have listened closely to it as is...
